About Tanah Lot

Tanah Lot ("land in the sea") was established by the Hindu priest Dang Hyang Nirartha in the 16th century on a dramatic offshore rock. At low tide you can walk across the mossy rocks to the temple base. The resident sea snakes are considered sacred guardians. Sunset here is a ritualised spectacle; for a quieter visit, arrive at sunrise when temple ceremonies are active and the tour buses are still at breakfast.
