Kawah Ijen
“Blue fire at midnight — Earth's rarest natural phenomenon”
About Kawah Ijen
Kawah Ijen (2,799 m) is a twin spectacle: the blue fire (api biru) before dawn, and the impossibly turquoise-green crater lake by sunrise. The blue fire is produced by liquid sulfur catching alight — one of only two places on Earth where this occurs. The midnight hike (3 km, ~1.5 hrs uphill) leads through sulfur-scented air to the crater rim, then down to the lake shore where miners still carry 80 kg loads of yellow sulfur out daily — a humbling sight. Sunrise over the lake turns the steam orange and gold.
